Instacart is a four-sided marketplace (consumers, Shoppers, retailers, advertisers), and interviewers will test whether you can reason about that without collapsing the problem to a two-sided one.
This guide is the 2026 round-by-round breakdown, including the specific flavor of coding problems, the system design questions that recur, the Shopper-side reasoning that separates offers, and the comp bands after a year and a half as a public company.
The loop at a glance
Standard SWE loop for SWE2 through Principal (E3-E6 equivalent):
- Recruiter screen (30 min) — team fit, comp, timeline.
- Technical phone screen (60 min) — one LeetCode medium on CoderPad, typically with an applied twist (e.g., "match orders to Shoppers").
- Onsite coding round 1 (60 min) — two medium problems or one medium-hard.

- "Given a tree of category taxonomies, find the deepest category that covers a set of items."
The bar is clean working code in the interview's primary language (Python, Go, or Java are most common; Ruby historically, but less so now as Instacart has migrated core services). Interviewers care about:
- Clarifying questions first. What's the input format? What's the expected output? What are edge cases? Silence-then-code scores worse than five minutes of scoping.
- Starting simple. Write the naive O(n^2) and then optimize. Don't jump to the optimal solution without showing the reasoning.
